One interpretation of “Edge” is that it is a cry against the ideals of female beauty.

It’s not that she didn’t want to be picture perfect, it’s that she couldn’t. But not knowing of the nature of Sylvia ‘s demise until after I read it , I still do not think it’s easy to understand if a Poet is truly depressed , or just very empathic , as usual. My Guess is that She did , and the original Title , or beginning , tied into the ending Lines about the Moon , and the Darkness that is almost , (or is) liquid around the Luminary , cratered edges of the Moon .

The form bears an exciting feature: It has ten stanzas, with each having only two lines, seized in an enjambment. The poem does not follow a certain rhyme scheme, but it contains various impressive internal rhymes or assonant constructions, e.g. Many considered her to be a model student and a good daughter.

They say with knowledge there is power. !this poem just rises above so many others knowing it was her last.beautiful.this is 1 ofmy fave plath poems.it is haunting + frightening.plath is rewriting greek mythology.she’s a modern-day medea in this poem-except medea kills herself.plath truely made dying an art asshe said in”lady lazaraus”.so creaive she was! This is about her acheving perfection threw dealth, she wrote this poem 4 days before she commeted her sucide.
Edge There is much symbolism here. The sentences are only completed if they cross this edge between the two stanzas, and the person in the poem only seems to find tranquility and “accomplishment” when crossing an edge. But um, at least I got an honest interpretation of her in me before I found out That it’s a Goddamm suicide note !

Here a confusion appears when trying to figure out who is meant by she: it could either be the moon or the woman, whose “blacks crackle and drag”.An earlier draft of “Edge” was called “Nuns in snow” and the observers were nuns travelling on a pilgrimage to watch the dead body of a woman. Such a tragic story…Im glad i’m a free American so i can voice my oppinion. Sylvia Plath is stupid! This poem is generally characteristic of Plath's late work, which, as Tim Kendall writes, features \"a style of heightened detachment and resignation in the face of an intractable destiny.\" This poem does not aim to please the reader; it defies poetic categories, and exists to express the poet's sense of hopel… It makes me think about how terribly lost and sad she must have been to write something so powerful about her own forthcoming death.this poem holds a despairing and reflective tone as the poet reaches the edge of her life, hence the title “Edge”. She is also visually compared to a Cleopatra-like figure with white serpents at each breast, the color white standing on the one hand for innocence, cleanliness and virginity but on the other hand being connected with emptiness, absence, coldness and privation. Sylvia Plath (/ p l æ θ /; October 27, 1932 – February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist, and short-story writer. She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for two of her published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems and Ariel, as well as The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her death. This creates a distances or detachedness between speaker and object of the poem, which will later on be elucidated. One could draw the parallel to the garden of Eden, where Eve crossed an edge, too, and committed a sinful act.
This could either mean the aspect of her time being over, i.e.

I’m more of a Herman Melville , Walt Whitman , with some Yeats , and Terence Mckenna sprinkled on top . Sylvia Plath, "Edge," p. 272 This line from Plath's final poem has long puzzled critics and readers because it suggests a potential desire to take her children with her into death. Therefore, the threatening power might as well be the person closest to them, their own mother. SUCK IT PIGS! Her words that ended up in the Lines are not associative Imagery because we all know death , and if you are not intimately aware of Death , I think of a female archetype when I think about death , I Loved her too much , though , and now I can not go within five hundred feet of her , says the court order .But I thing the word choices are directly as defined in a dictionary , meant to paint the Imagery direct ( red is red , black is black , not red to make the reader think anger , or blood , etc ), not metaphor association , Death is direct , quick , wanton , or unexpected , but is never in need of metaphors to describe it’s astonishing effect on the Living ..I also did not think the ” Grand Canyons ” of spacing between the lines , certain lines , the grand canyon would be a Poetic use of metaphor . © 2020 American Poems - Analysis, Themes, Meaning and Literary Devices. eNotes plot summaries cover all the significant action of Edge. I was wondering why the Title was so out of place , She either gave it one , and someone kept it personally , or She did not Title it . The baby-sitter was two hours late, so Plath obviously died. Born in 1932 to middle class parents in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Sylvia Plath published her first poem at the age of eight.

Plath wrote the poem, Edge, four days before she committed her suicide.
