You can distinguish a squirrel from other rodents by its bushy tail and big eyes. Western gray squirrels are gray above with sharply distinct white under parts. Tree squirrels are considered as resident small game. The most common color is gray above with a broad reddish band down the back. Tree squirrels build nests out of sticks and leaves near the tops of trees. Several color variations may occur in a single population. There are also two nonnative invasive species of concern in the state. At least 12 or 13 color varieties occur in fox squirrels. Tassel-eared squirrels are restricted to Ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest, usually at altitudes above 5,000 feet. The western gray, Douglas, American red and northern flying squirrels are all native to Oregon. Red squirrels often are associated with coniferous forests.
Northern flying squirrels occur across northern North America. Western gray squirrels are confined to the west coast and western Nevada (Figure 2b). Large tree squirrels typically are orange-brown, but color varies greatly from all black to silver gray.

Douglas squirrels are restricted to the west coast from southwestern British Columbia south through the Sierras to northern Baja California (Figure 2c). The ranges of the 2 species significantly overlap. Both species have small ear tufts and often have a black stripe separating the dark upper color from the light belly. Squirrels are arboreal, which means they usually make their homes in trees. Sometimes however, squirrels may damage trees by chewing on its bark and often times, squirrels use trees as a means to get into a house to nest, primarily in the attic. Whatever the reason, there are several approaches to getting rid of squirrels in trees. Local populations of white gray squirrels are found in western North Carolina, upstate New York, and other localities. Tree squirrels are also the larger of the two types, measuring between 12 and 20 inches long, while ground squirrels average about 8 to 12 inches in length.
